Inheritance tax moves from domicile to long-term residence

Whether non-UK assets are within UK inheritance tax now depends on being a long-term UK resident, broadly resident in at least 10 of the previous 20 tax years, rather than on domicile. The status continues for a period after leaving the UK, so a move abroad does not end the exposure at once.

How this register is kept

Every entry cites a government, legislation or regulator page and shows the date it was last checked against it. The register records what changes and when; what a change means for a particular structure is in the linked analysis.

Each entry keeps its address permanently, so a link to a change, or a calendar event created from the feed, keeps pointing at the same rule. The definitions behind the terms used here are in the cross-border glossary.

This is general information on the rules as the official sources stated them on the dates shown. It is not tax, legal or financial advice for any individual situation.

Does one of these dates reach your structure?

A director will review your enquiry and respond to scope the work and next steps.

One final certainty.
