Tax reliefUKReviewed October 2026
A UK inheritance tax relief that can reduce the taxable value of qualifying business assets, such as shares in an unquoted trading company or an interest in a trading business, by up to 100%. It is what lets a family business pass down without a forced sale to meet the tax.
From 6 April 2026 the 100% rate applies only to the first £1 million of qualifying assets, with 50% relief above that, so the value passing free of inheritance tax is no longer unlimited.
A definition of an established legal or tax concept for general information. It is not advice on any individual situation.
